What started out as portrait sketch from a photograph of a young Pakistani girl, has ended up as a sort of Manga style cartoon.  If I was a story teller maybe I would create a back story for her and a whole adventure for her to embark upon.  I'm not though, so I'll leave that bit up to your own imagination...

The calligraphy contest

Happy New Year!  We're back for 2016!

I've done very little sketching of late, put off somewhat by the uninspiring winter darkness.  Keen to get back in the game and having a few minutes to spare at lunch time, I drew a little sketch from a lovely photograph in The Guardian's photo of the day section.  This is a little girl taking part in a calligraphy contest in Japan. She is drawing in earnest on a large scroll with her big Japanese special calligraphy brush.

I follow loads of sketchers on Twitter who draw some wonderful street scenes, from the highly detailed to the mere suggestion of place.  I always have those sketchers in mind when I try to do my own urban sketch.  I'm so far away from emulating those guys but I will continue to persevere.

Trying out willow charcoal again

I bought willow charcoal a while ago but haven't used it apart from one quick sketch just to test it out. I fished it out of my art box again today for this sketch of the Grand Canal.  I was just going for the basic shape of the canal but even then I find charcoal very difficult to work with.  It's also pretty messy.  You certainly get found out pretty quickly as an artist.  I have much respect for those who can do amazing work with this stuff.
